While on an agate hunting walk between the Vermillion Lifesaving Station and Crisp Point Lighthouse in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, Matt and Sonja Sprague made an unusual find.

In the Crisp Point Lighthouse newsletter, Matt recalled the moment. “I saw an object at the edge of the water with waves washing over it. As I approached, it took the form of a very old type of wheel. It was partially buried in the sand and fought my efforts to lift it free, but I was able to raise it up for inspection. It was about four feet tall and had wooden spokes and seemed somewhat heavy.”

Later that day they told Ben Musielak about their find, and Ben immediately set in motion the eventual efforts to secure the wheel, which was later confirmed to be a wheel from a U.S. Life Saving Service Beach (Rope) Cart that was once, most likely, used at the Crisp Point Life Saving Station around 1885.

With the permission of the Spragues, the old wheel, a vital historical relic to the past, is now on display at the Crisp Point Lighthouse. (Photo courtesy Rick Brockway, Crisp Point Lighthouse Historical Society.)
