Champlain Traditions

I really enjoyed the May/June 2017 issue!

I especially liked the well-researched article on the Colchester Point Lighthouse and its ultimate placement by Mrs. Webb at the Shelburne Museum.

I’ve lived on Colchester Point in view of the crib for almost 40 years, so the story has special meaning to me.

I worked on the ferry while in college here and after getting that job while sharing beers with one of the engineers on a winter’s night. I became part of a nearly 400 year maritime continuum beginning with Samuel de Champlain that was explained to me over 4 summers going back and forth learning from the longest serving captain in the company.

We commissioned Champlain artist Ernie Haas to paint the scene shown a number of years ago and it graces our living room mantle still today. Whiteface Mountain is behind the famous steamer Vermont as it passes by, headed south from Plattsburgh NY to Burlington VT.

I asked for a bit of humanity in the midst of structure and machine and he gave it by the act of a simple wave from keeper to crew member in the window below.

Lighthouse Digest 25th Anniversary

On behalf of the board of directors, staff and volunteers of the U.S. Lighthouse Society, I am privileged to write this letter expressing to you our sincere gratitude for all you have done to preserve lighthouse history over the past quarter century.

As lighthouse keepers of the past kept the light, you have mirrored their efforts by keeping a torch burning that all of us can follow with regard to education, research and history. In addition, your dedication created an important program so that the brave souls who served at America’s light station would be acknowledged and remembered. This is type of service is selfless in nature and demonstrates your true character. It is an honorable task to recognize those who might otherwise be forgotten.

I look forward to many more years of collaboration with you as we teach a new generation to care for lighthouses and the people who dedicated their lives to a higher cause.

With respect for a job well done,

Jeffrey S. Gales
