Protestors Say No

About 400 protestors showed up at a local government meeting to show their disapproval of the government’s plan to turn Spain’s Cabo de Palos Lighthouse over to a private firm to operate the lighthouse as a hotel. They want the lighthouse to stay in government ownership and keep the lighthouse open to the public.

New Tram at Nubble

The tram that is used to haul supplies from the mainland to the island where Maine’s iconic Nubble Lighthouse is located has finally been replaced. The tram and its bucket were damaged beyond repair in a storm five years ago. The new tram with its bucket came in handy when the lighthouse underwent a makeover this past September. Once upon a time, one lighthouse keeper used it to transport his son so that the child could attend school on the mainland. This was a practice that was stopped when his superiors found out what was going on.

Vernors Lighthouses

Vernors, a regional ginger flavored soda pop, recently released a series of five lighthouse designed cans. The beautifully designed images on cans of Vernors featured the following Michigan lighthouses: Big Sable Point, Crisp Point, Eagle Harbor, Grand Haven, and Tawas Point. This was a limited edition run and was available in Michigan only from mid-August through October. Hopefully, they will do other lighthouse images in the future and other soda pop companies will copy the idea with lighthouses from all over the United States.

Terry Pepper Honored

Congratulations to Terry Pepper of the Great Lakes Lighthouse Keepers Association (GLLKA) on his Lifetime Achievement award from Michigan’s Essence of Emmet Collaborative. Each year, the group recognizes people and organizations in their communities who are working hard to preserve and promote their region’s history. Terry’s dedication to lighthouse history has led to countless magazine and newspaper articles as well as TV documentaries. His web series “Seeing the Light” is unmatched in scope for sharing Great Lakes maritime history, and his research has led to many lighthouses being saved from destruction.

Thousands Visit Greece Lights

It was estimated that over 11,000 people visited 23 of the lighthouse across Greece on one day during the International Lighthouse Weekend this past August when the lighthouses were open for ten hours. The lighthouses of Greece are under the jurisdiction of the Hellenic Navy.)

ANT OIC Re-enlists

This past August 24, Boatswain’s Mate Petty Officer First Class Jessica Guidroz, who is the Officer-In-Charge (OIC) of the Aids to Navigation (ANT) of the Ponce Inlet Coast Guard Station, re-enlisted for a five year stint in the Coast Guard in a ceremony held at Florida’s Ponce Inlet Lighthouse. Jessica Guidroz has been in the Coast Guard for 15 years.

Artist-In-Residence Program Successful

The 2017 Lighthouse Artist-In-Residence Program at Wisconsin’s Kenosha North Pier Lighthouse was rated as highly successful at the end of this season. All of the artists who participated were able to showcase their talents and sell their artwork to the public at various times over the summer months.

Keeper Laid to Rest

Henry Henvey, 87, the former keeper and later the attendant of the 1844 St. John’s Point Lighthouse in County Down, Ireland was laid to rest this past September in a funeral service that started at the lighthouse where he served faithfully for so many years. As his casket was driven away from the lighthouse to the cemetery it was draped by the flag of the Commissioner of Irish Lights. Praises and accolades about him came in from around the world. Our sincere condolences go out to his family and friends.

Money for Shipwreck Point

The group that takes care of Canada’s Shipwreck Point Lighthouse in Naufrage, Prince Edward Island has received $28,540 to make repairs to the lighthouse which is one of only two concrete lighthouses on Prince Edward Island. The lighthouse was built in 1969 to replace an earlier 1913 tower.

Harvey Destroys CG Station

While the Coast Guard was stretched thin saving lives during Hurricane Harvey and Tropical Storm Harvey, its station in Port Aransas, Texas was leveled, totally destroying it.
