Because a large chunk of metal plating has ripped away from Maryland’s 1882 Bloody Point Lighthouse, leaving the interior of the lighthouse open to the elements, the structure has now been added to the Lighthouse Digest Doomsday List of Endangered Lighthouses.

In December of 2006, the lighthouse was purchased from the government for $100,000 by Michael Gabriel of Carson City, Nevada. Although he announced big plans for the lighthouse at that time, he has done nothing so far to save the lighthouse.

In May of 1960, the lighthouse was heavily damaged in an explosion caused by a fire started from an electrical short. The young Coast Guardsmen stationed at the lighthouse at that time barely escaped with their lives.

If something is not done soon to save the lighthouse, the day may soon come that it is no longer standing.
