Threatened by erosion, New Jersey’s beautifully restored 1849 East Point Lighthouse in Maurice River, New Jersey has been added to the Lighthouse Digest Doomsday List of Endangered Lighthouses.

The addition of East Point Lighthouse to the Doomsday List follows the May 17th announcement by the nonprofit Preservation New Jersey that they were listing the lighthouse as one of the 10 Most Endangered Historic Sites in the state.

Erosion at the lighthouse, which has been an ongoing problem at the lighthouse for years, has had a number of temporary fixes, none of which have solved the problem. Emergency measures such as sand bags and sand being plowed near the lighthouse have provided minimal protection. Pump stations installed in the basement of the lighthouse in 2017 have also helped. But one major storm surge could undermine the integrity of the brick lighthouse.

This summer the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection will install a 900-foot-long sediment-filled sleeve of textile fabric that they hope will serve as a bulwark against the water. It is unknown if that will help or not, but some type of long range solution will be needed to protect the lighthouse.
