The National Park Service at Cape Lookout National Seashore reported that a group of 8 to 10 people were caught breaking into the Cape Lookout Lighthouse tower on Sunday night, July 26, 2020.
According to the reports, a group of young adults from their late teens to early 20s, all local residents, first attempted to break into the lighthouse about 10:00 pm but were chased away. The same group then returned around midnight with tools that they used to remove the hinges from the lighthouse door to get inside. Five of them made it to the lantern.
However, they were all caught. The National Park Service issued citations and fines to the five people who actually entered the lighthouse. According to park official B.G. Horvat, the culprits all cooperated and admitted their guilt. Interestingly, no outside law enforcement was involved and no arrests or charges were filed.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the 1859 tower has been closed this year for public climbing.
