Deemed too hazardous for the public, the popular forest trail, between the Lewis and Clark Interpretative Center and the Cape Disappointment Lighthouse in Ilwaco, Washington, has been closed, according to a recent article in the Chinook Observer.
When contacted for verification, LT Jessica Shafer, Commanding Officer, Station Cape Disappointment stated, “Future repairs to the lighthouse are pending. Working closely with the Washington State Parks Department, we communicated the change in posture regarding access earlier this July. We look to offer scheduled, coordinated times and tours of the Lighthouse in the future with the help of our volunteer service, the Coast Guard Auxiliary.”
The Coast Guard said that they will install fencing along the property line between the Cape Disappointment
State Park and the Cape Disappointment Lighthouse property.
In the past, public access to the interior of the Cape Disappointment Lighthouse has rarely been granted.
The exterior of the 1856 lighthouse is currently in disgraceful condition and without public viewing it may very well allowed to fall into a state of disrepair. We are now wondering if the Cape Disappointment Lighthouse should be added to the Lighthouse Digest Doomsday List of Endangered Lighthouses.
