The roof had suffered from normal deterioration due to sun, wind and rain. The work crew removed the multiple layers of accumulated paint and exposed it down to the bare metal. The roof was then cleaned and primed in preparation for the application of Acyrmax, which is a brand name for a fibrous mesh-like material that hardens to seal any pinholes or hairline cracks that are common place with many older metal roofs. The roof was then repainted with its distinctive fire engine red color.

The 1883 Drum Point Lighthouse was deactivated in 1962 and left to the elements and subsequent extreme vandalism. In 1975 the lighthouse was moved to the Calvert Marine Museum where it underwent a miraculous restoration and was opened to the public on June 24, 1978. (Photos courtesy Robert J.
