Because the primary mission of Lighthouse Digest is to research, save, and report United States lighthouse history, for the most part, we are unable to relay and write about lighthouses from other countries. But, from time to time, we receive photos like these and feel compelled to share them. Such is the case with these photos of Nova Scotia Canada’s Guyon Island Light Station taken back in 2014 that were just submitted to us by Jason Marsh.
The tower here was built in 1964 to replace an earlier tower that was built in 1877. The lighthouse was automated in 1986 and its last keeper was removed. It’s sad to see any light station in such a state of shambles. At one time, keepers and their families lived here to save the lives of the mariners at sea. It was a place where children played and laughter and good times could be heard from the keepers’ homes.
We can only wonder what the Guyon Island Lighthouse Station looks like today in 2021, seven years after these photographs were taken.
