Under the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act, the General Services Administration is offering Ohio’s Cleveland Harbor West Pierhead Lighthouse free of charge to any other government agency or qualified nonprofit. If none apply for the lighthouse, it will be auctioned off to the highest bidder. The lighthouse is also known as the Cleveland Harbor Main Light.

Interestingly, when its sister lighthouse, the Cleveland Harbor East Pierhead Lighthouse, was also offered for free a decade ago, no one wanted it and it was sold at auction. It was sold for $10,000 to Gary Zaremba, president of the New York City based Artisan Restoration Group.

Will the Cleveland Harbor West Breakwater Lighthouse also wind up on the auction block? Time will tell.
