As of June 15, 2022, the 1871 Point Iroquois Lighthouse located within the Hiawatha National Forest on the shores of Michigan’s Lake Superior, is now under the management of the Bay Mills Indian Community, thanks to an agreement worked out with the U.S. Forest Service that owns the lighthouse.
Reportedly, the new management will make some changes in the exhibits to better reflect the lighthouse’s local heritage. Hours of operation will also change, including plans to keep the lighthouse open during the winter months.
The lighthouse was automated in 1962, and in 1971, the Coast Guard deactivated the station. The 4th order Fresnel lens that was once in the lantern is now at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.
