Wednesday, June 29, 2022, the Peden family of five from Louisville, Kentucky was greeted with cheers, horns and string confetti as they signed the guest log at the visitor center at West Quoddy Head Lighthouse in Lubec, Maine. While stunned, they quickly learned that Janet Peden was the 600,000th visitor to sign the log book since the lighthouse visitor center opened twenty years ago.

The celebration moved to the spacious, newly-remodeled main museum room in the former light keeper’s house, where they were given a certificate, a bag of gifts, and an artistic photo of the lighthouse.

The presentations were made by Kimberly Ashby, Executive Director of the West Quoddy Head Light Keepers Association (WQHLKA), the nonprofit that operates the visitor center and museum at the easternmost lighthouse on the Atlantic Coast of the United States.

Volunteers and WQHLKA Board Members witnessing this happy and noteworthy event were Michael Rice, Betty and Rich Mistler, Steve Hoppin and Dale Kuchenbecker, as well as West Quoddy Head Park Ranger Brian Moores, who gave the Pedens a personal guided tour of the light tower.

Janet and her husband, Eric Peden, stated that they were trying to visit the four corners of the United States and were really excited to reach Lubec. They will now, forever have a special memory of their visit to Maine.
