Notes:
Bell Island was home to thriving iron mines from the late 19th century until 1966. The lighthouse had to be rebuilt circa 2004, as the earlier structure was close to edge of an eroding bluff. The new structure is very similar to the earlier one. Height of Focal Plane: 174 Characteristic and Range: Flashing white every six seconds, visible for eight nautical miles. From St. John's it's a 20-minute drive to the ferry terminal at Portugal Cove, then a 20-minute ferry ride to Bell Island. For ferry information call (709) 895�6931. The lighthouse is at the eastern point of Bell Island at the end of Lighthouse Road. There is a scenic hiking trail from the lighthouse.
