Shown here are the first beacons and fog bell structure to be built on the Harbor of Refuge Breakwater in 1902. They didn’t last long. A 1903 storm washed away all traces of them. Finally, in 1908 a permanent lighthouse was built on the site. (Photo courtesy Lewes Historical Society.)
