Vintage image of Perkins Island Lighthouse from the air. In 2000, through the efforts of Tim Harrison, when he was president of the American Lighthouse Foundation (ALF), a lease was secured from the Coast Guard to ALF for the care of the tower, and a local chapter of ALF was created. However, the keeper’s house and rest of the structures are owned by the State of Maine, which has never made any efforts to maintain or restore the keeper’s house, but the Friends of Perkins Island Lighthouse, a chapter of ALF, has done some superficial work to stabilize the house while caring for the tower. However, it was recently announced that a partnership of the sorts between ALF and its local chapter with the Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands and the Maine Island Trail Association has been formed to restore the exterior of the keeper’s house this spring and paint the tower.
