Captain Richard Everett Baker Phillips, who was onshore when the Cross Rip Lightship was lost, had a long and illustrious career in the U.S. Lighthouse Service. According to his obituary published on December 18, 1949, Captain Phillips served for 32 years and was credited with saving 42 lives. He was born on December 16, 1865, in Harwich, Massachusetts and besides the Cross Rip Lightship, he also served on the Vineyard Lightship as Master and as Mate aboard the Pollock Rip Lightship. He is shown here at his home in Dennisport during his retirement.
