At the conclusion of the Spanish-American War, during the American-Philippine Revolution (1899-1902), the forts on Balabac Island served as prison camps for illegal political nationalists. The Cape Melville Lighthouse was captured by local Moro insurgents during this Revolution who occupied the light tower and grounds for an extended period of time until a contingent of American sailors from a U.S. Navy gunboat liberated it. The chief of the island’s Moros was killed and a number of prisoners taken during the ensuing firefight. The American sailors remained on site safeguarding the compound.
