The glow of a kerosene lamp is refracted and magnified by a lens once used as a standby light at Betty Island, Nova Scotia. The 1910 annual Department of Marine and Fisheries Report refers to this “storm”-type lantern as a “Chance Anchor Lens Lantern.” Under the heading “Illuminating Apparatus” in the 1919 List of Lights it is described thus: Those (dioptric lenses) marked of the 7th order are anchor lenses or anchor lens lanterns of 5 inches focal distance.
