We are saddened to report the passing of Clifton S. Morong, 88, who came from a long line of Maine lighthouse keepers. In keeping with the family tradition Morong served an illustrious career of 23 years in the United States Coast Guard.
Among his duties in the Coast Guard he served as a lighthouse keeper at Maine’s Perkins Island Light and Race Point Lighthouse in Massachusetts. He also had the distinction of serving at Cape Elizabeth Lighthouse in Cape Elizabeth, Maine where his father Alonzo Morong also served as lighthouse keeper.
Our condolences go out to his family and wife Shirley, who over the years has so graciously shared some of the family memories and photos with us.
Among those in the Morong dynasty of lighthouse service employees was Frederic S. Morong Sr. who served as a keeper at numerous Maine lighthouses including Maine’s Little River Lighthouse and Frederic S. Morong Jr., the lighthouse engineer who wrote the famous lighthouse poem Brasswork.
