The amazing first order Fresnel lens at the Green Cape Lighthouse, the first concrete lighthouse built in Australia, dark since 1992, was recently relit for its 125th birthday party.
Ian Clifford, vice president of Lighthouses of Australia, who was instrumental in returning the old light to working order, had to convince the Australian Maritime Authority to turn off the weaker 37,000 candle-powered solar beacon, so the old one million candlepower beacon could be relit for the ceremony.
The lighthouse was built in 1883 as one of a series of beacons all constructed at about the same time along the coastline of New South Wales. The lighthouse, which is in the Ben Boyd National Park, is open for tours and the assistant keeper's house is now open for overnight stays.
