The Monarch Island Lighthouse on Shillay, Western Isles, Scotland, which had been dark since 1942, has now been relit as an active aid to navigation.

It had been replaced by a modern optic nearby, however complaints and suggestions from mariners convinced the Northern Lighthouse Board to place a beacon back in the tower. Since the beacon had been abandoned for so many years it took lighthouse officials several years to rehabilitate the tower. For long time readers of Lighthouse Digest, you may recall a story in our August 2006 issue, about Thomas Douglas who was a lighthouse keeper here. (Photograph by Jac Volbeda.)

This story appeared in the Jan/Feb 2009 edition of Lighthouse Digest Magazine. The print edition contains more stories than our internet edition, and each story generally contains more photographs - often many more - in the print edition.
