This past Christmas, Lilla Frerichs-Ryan created a 54 inch by 40 inch mosaic wall hanging for a holiday gift for her father-in-law, Jack Ryan, a retired high school English teacher who has photographed 184 lighthouses.
Jack, who is a long time subscriber to Lighthouse Digest, knew that Lilla was working on something from his many photographs, but he, along with probably just about anyone else, could never have imagined the immenseness of the project.
Lilla started by selecting Jack’s photo of the East Quoddy Lighthouse (Head Harbour Lighthouse, Canada), which he had taken in September 2008, as the image to be created. She then used 493 of Jack’s lighthouse photos, cropping most of them to about an inch in size until she had about 900 different images, which, when run through the program, ended up creating the almost 3000 “mosaic” images used to make the East Quoddy Lighthouse mosaic image. The wall hanging is on a fabric called Photo-Tex, which has a self-adhesive back that allows it to hang on the wall and be repositioned up to about 100 times. The image is now on display on Jack’s living room wall.
All we can say is “Wow.”
