Spring may now be upon us, but spring was not in the air this past February at Canada’s picturesque Swallowtail Lighthouse on Grand Manan Island in New Brunswick. The entire light station was encrusted in snow and ice, much of it frozen to the buildings and the tower and in some cases literally covered the windows.
Looking beautiful and bleak at the same time, the scene could easily remind us of the 1968 Cold War espionage suspense thriller movie Ice Station Zebra. I could almost image actors Rock Hudson, Patrick McGoohan, Ernest Borgnine, and Jim Brown stepping out of the doorway of the lighthouse and watching as the Russian paratroopers were landing on the island. Perhaps Swallowtail Lighthouse would make the ideal location for a remake of the movie, which would be much better than the ghastly horror flick Hemoglobin (Bleeders) that was filmed here in 1996.
