This original press photo dated June 8, 1979 shows Bosun’s Mate Luther M. Jacobsen inside the 2nd order Fresnel lens at Florida’s Hillsboro Inlet Lighthouse. Unfortunately, the caption for the photo or the story that went with this photo was not with it. To put the time era into perspective, earlier in the year of 1979 when this photo was taken, the Shah of Iran fled to Egypt, causing a chain reaction that caused the America Hostage Crisis; Patty Hearst was released from jail after being pardoned by President Jimmy Carter; Margaret Thacher was elected as the first female prime minister of Great Britain; and the American Ambassador to Afghanistan, Adolph Dubs, was kidnapped and later assassinated by the kidnappers who were subsequently killed in a gun battle with police.
The Hillsboro Inlet Lighthouse, located in Pompano Beach, Florida, is the site of the Barefoot Mailman Statue, and in 2003 the lighthouse was featured on a postage stamp as part of the Southeastern Lighthouse Stamp Series issued by the U.S. Postal Service. Jacobsen, a boatswain’s mate, (Bosun’s Mate) was stationed at Hillsboro Inlet Lighthouse from 1978 to 1981. A boatswain’s mate is often considered as the most versatile member of a Coast Guard operational team, whether stationed on land or at sea. Hopefully, at some point, perhaps the story associated with the photograph will surface.
