The Historical Association of South Haven, Michigan is undertaking a campaign to raise $300,000 to restore its iconic red South Haven Pierhead Lighthouse.
Like many communities with lighthouses, the lighthouse is widely loved in the community and its image can be found on banners and signs throughout the community, including on its storm drain manhole covers.
The Historical Association took ownership of the lighthouse in 2012, and since then they have been making plans for the restoration and started raising money. Of the $300,000 needed to restore the lighthouse, they have raised about $100,000 toward that goal. But they are now taking their case on-line with the popular GoFundMe web site in hopes that the locals and lighthouse lovers will step forward with donations to help their cause.
Ed Appleyard of the Historical Association said in referring to just one nugget of its interesting history, “When we were kids, we took swimming lessons off the pier. People find that remarkable today, but in those days there was no pool locally and swimming lessons were taught right next to the lighthouse.”
Donations can be made on-line at http://www.gofundme.com/lkezkg, or by mail to Historical Association of South Haven, Lighthouse Fund, 355 Hubbard St., P.O. Box 552, South Haven, Michigan 49090.
