Without a question, there is probably no one better suited to compile a book about California’s St. George Reef Lighthouse than Guy Towers, who has been working to save and restore this treacherous outpost since 1986. When it was built in 1892, the St. George Reef Lighthouse was the most expensive lighthouse built in the United States. This soft cover, 127-page book is loaded with absolutely great historic photos, including keeper photos and a number of photos showing what life was like inside the tower. It is definitely one of the better lighthouse books published by the Images of America books from Arcadia Publishing. Lighthouse Inspector Harry Rhodes once said, “Show me a man who has served at St. George Reef Lighthouse and I will show you a man and a lighthouse keeper.” This is a must have book for any lighthouse enthusiast. It is available for $21.99 plus shipping as item #2172 from Lighthouse Digest, P.O. Box 250, East Machias, ME 04630, or by calling 207-259-2121. It can also be ordered on-line at www.LighthouseDigest.com.
