Back in 1954, the Peter Pan Book and Record Co. came out with Blinky, The Lighthouse Ship as a wonderful, full color book and 45 RPM record for young children. Not only did this book help teach children how to read, it also gave them a history lesson of sorts about lightships. As the record was played, there would be a signal telling the child to turn the page and follow along.
In 1971, Ambassador Record Corporation rereleased the book and record set. However, as with many children’s items of this nature, over the years they were disposed of. Occasionally, some can still be found in antique shops, 2nd hand stores, and on auction sites.
Years ago we had one in our collection but it was donated to the collection of Maine Lighthouse Museum. We’d like to thank Lighthouse Digest subscriber Lori Harvey for sending us this copy that she purchased on-line, and then gave it to us. It will now be part of our archives. Shown is the cover of the book, the record, and the last three pages of the book.
Sadly, there are very few lightships left in existence, but fortunately some have been saved as first class museums to help preserve this vital part of lighthouse history.
