Thanks to a public outcry and the tenacious efforts of the Blockhouse Lighthouse Preservation Society, the Canadian government has stepped forward to save the crumbling Blockhouse Point Lighthouse.
Located on the west side of the entrance to Charlottetown Harbour on the south coast of Prince Edward Island, the lighthouse has been deteriorating for a number of years. But, because they did not own the lighthouse, the Blockhouse Lighthouse Preservation Society was prevented from doing any repairs or restoration to the lighthouse that had been declared excess property in 2010. Their application for ownership was delayed because The First Nations Mi’kmaq Confederacy had staked a claim for the lighthouse as well as 19 other lighthouses.
As a result of the massive public outpouring, the Canadian Coast Guard sent out an inspection crew and it was then announced that restoration would begin at once. The work included repairing windows, corner casings, and the roof and the deck on the front veranda. They also replaced rotted wood siding, which was prevalent in many areas. The Blockhouse Point Light Station dates back to 1851.
