Lydia Herrick Fichtner was married to lighthouse keeper Arthur G. Fichtner (1894-1976) and the couple lived most of their lives in the Ludington area of Michigan. Lydia was well known for her poetry and her poems were often published in local newspapers. For historical purposes we are sharing one of her poems with you. It was published in the Ludington Daily News on May 18, 1957.
It’s Great to Live in Michigan
Oh he who would a sweet song make.
Just look around for thoughts to take.
The land indeed is wondrous, fair,
And sweetest folks dwell everywhere.
Oh, Michigan, my native state,
To live in it, is truly great.
If you would seek a quiet rest,
Where nature’s balm is just the best,
Then here a home you’ll want to build
On land with sun kissed beauty filled.
For growing green fragrant flowers,
You’ll love this Michigan of ours.
There are lakes, rivers, springs and bays,
Boats, piers, and docks, for fishing days,
You’ll find wooded tracts, tree crown hills,
Wood folk grazing by fern fringed hills.
If real scenic beauty you’d see,
In Michigan you’ll aim to be.
Whether you’re seeking work or play,
Our industries will bid you stay.
Our resort places will give too,
Everything you wish to do.
Our state has all good things for man.
It’s great to live in Michigan.
