The South Carolina State Legislature has approved $3 million for repairs to the 1875 Hunting Island Lighthouse.
The starting date for the structural repairs was not determined at press time. Because of concerns for the integrity of the bricks due to cracks and also the deteriorating stairs, only six visitors at a time have currently been allowed to climb the 136-foot-tall tower.
Apparently, no plans were made, or funds approved, to address the erosion that also threatens the historic lighthouse.
