Photo Caption:

This image of Dutch Island Lighthouse is believed to have been taken in 1884. When the fog bell, shown here suspended from the tower, was installed in 1878, Marian Fife, wife of keeper George Fife, was hired as an assistant keeper to help with the extra work required to ring the fog bell. When George Fife left the island in 1883, and Henry Crawford became the keeper, the government abolished the position of assistant keeper. The keeper’s house was demolished in the mid-1900s. This photo is of important historical significance because it shows a person, probably the keeper, standing on what we believe to be the base of the original 1827 tower that was taken down when the current 1857 tower was built.
