The New England Lighthouse Lovers (NELL) has donated $6,200 to Rhode Island’s Dutch Island Lighthouse Society (DILS) to purchase a used boat and engine that will allow them to access the island lighthouse, rather than hire a boat each time they have to go out to work there.
This is the second donation that NELL has made to the DILS. Back in 2001, NELL donated $1,200 for the cost of a solid steel door for the lighthouse.
The Dutch Island Light Station was established in 1827 and the current tower was built in 1857. The lighthouse was automated in 1947 and the keeper’s house was demolished in the mid-1900s. The lighthouse was discontinued as an aid-to-navigation in July of 1979. However, on November 17, 2007 the Dutch Island Lighthouse Society relighted the beacon.
NELL is an IRS-approved 501(c)3 nonprofit, and over the years they have raised tens of thousands of dollars that they have given to numerous and varied lighthouse projects in the New England States.
