John H. Paul, who was the keeper at Dutch Island Lighthouse from 1927 to 1931, is shown here with his three sons. John Paul loved life at Dutch Island, especially its large spacious keeper’s house for his family with plenty of land for a garden and its outstanding scenery. It was reported that he would often go out on the rocks and catch a bushel of blackfish before breakfast. John Paul started his lighthouse career in 1908 at New York’s Execution Rocks Lighthouse. Over the years, he also served at Montauk Point Lighthouse in New York, Stamford Harbor Lighthouse in Connecticut, Stratford Shoal Light in Connecticut, and Borden Flats Lighthouse in Massachusetts before arriving at Dutch Island Light in 1927.
